Maths at Hookstone Chase Primary School
At Hookstone Chase, we teach Maths using a ‘Teaching for Mastery’ approach. This means that rather than simply memorising procedures, pupils develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. This approach enables them to make meaningful connections and apply their learning in different situations.
We develop mathematical skills through visible modelling, questioning, teaching in small steps, and opportunities for reasoning and problem-solving. Learning progresses through a concrete, pictorial, and abstract approach, helping children build a clear understanding of how numbers relate to the real world. Modelling is a key part of our maths lessons, where we explicitly teach mathematical vocabulary and reasoning skills, empowering children to think creatively and choose appropriate strategies to solve problems.
Our Key Aims
At Hookstone Chase, we encourage all children to Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Ready to Learn in Maths by:
- Developing their individual mathematical skills and understanding, fostering a lifelong enthusiasm for Maths.
- Building confidence in calculations, logical thinking, and mathematical language.
- Strengthening a range of mental and written strategies, ensuring speed and accuracy while recognising connections across different areas of Maths.
Mastering Number and Tables Fluency
In Reception and KS1, pupils take part in daily Maths sessions following the NCETM’s Mastering Number programme, which builds strong foundations in number fluency.
In KS2, daily sessions focus on ensuring all children achieve fluency in essential multiplication and division facts, equipping them with the skills needed for more advanced mathematical concepts.
Numbots and Times Tables Rock Stars
To further develop automaticity, pupils engage with online learning platforms, including Numbots (for Reception and KS1) and Times Tables Rock Stars (for Year 2 upwards). Success on these platforms is celebrated in our weekly Celebration Assembly, where trophies are awarded to winners to proudly display on their desks!
